Mix-a-Mash

Getting started

Words Mix-a-Mash uses

These are the words the app and the guides use, with a short meaning for each.

The mix

Lane
Live Mix has three lanes, the violet Main songs lane, the purple Section vocals lane and the pink Line vocals lane. You hear one lane at a time, the one with the bright border.
Mashup
The vocals of one song over the instrumental of another. You hear a mashup when you tap the pink or purple lane on Live Mix.
Mix
The music the host plays, built from their library as it plays. Friends join the mix from their phones.
Opening song
The first song of a mix. The mix picks it unless the host chooses one in Library, and it can be changed only while the mix is stopped at the start.
Part
One stretch of the mix. The mix is a chain of parts, and it plans a few parts ahead of what you hear.
Request
A song someone asked the mix to work in. The Requests guide says how.
Row
The top or bottom half of a lane. Each lane holds its blocks in two rows.
Song change
The point where the mix moves from one song to the next. Live Mix draws it as a block with two covers, and the block's details call it a "Transition".
Theme
A few words that describe a mood, such as "midnight jazz, neon city". The host sets it on Home by tapping the theme and choosing "Set", and the mix leans toward it.

Your music

Getting ready
A song that is still being read and split into vocals and an instrumental. The app shows "Getting ready" on it while that happens.
Instrumental
A song without its vocals. A mashup puts one song's vocals over another song's instrumental.
Main songs
Songs that play as themselves. Main songs is also the name of the violet lane on Live Mix, one of the two mix sources and a column on Requests.
Mix source
What the mix draws its songs from. There are two, Main songs and Vocals, and the host picks playlists or "Everything" for each in Library.
Playlist
A named list of songs that the host makes in Library and picks as a mix source.
Ready for mashups
A song that has finished getting ready, so it can take part in a mashup. A song that hasn't finished still plays as a whole song.
Song
A piece of music in your library, from an mp3, flac or wav file in the folder you chose.
Vocals
The sung part of a song, apart from the instrumental. Vocals is also the name of the second mix source and a column on Requests.

People

Guest
A phone or tablet that joined a mix with a join code or link, and the person holding it. A guest needs no account and can request songs, and the Live Mix guide says what else a joined phone can do.
Host
The computer that runs Mix-a-Mash for a mix, and the person running it. The music plays from that computer's speakers or headphones.
Phone remote
A phone signed in to the same account as the host computer, used to control it. Choose "Control my own computer" on the phone to set one up, and read the phone guide for how it differs from a guest.

Tempo and beats

BPM
Beats per minute, the speed of a song. Live Mix shows the speed of the mix in BPM, such as 100 BPM.
Downbeat
The first of every four beats. Live Mix numbers downbeats from the start of the mix, and the DJ panel's skip buttons move 8 downbeats at a time.
