Mix-a-Mash

Getting started

Requests

Requests is where you ask the mix to work a song in. The host, a phone remote or any guest can request songs.

The key idea

A request is a strong hint, not an order. The mix works the song into parts it hasn't planned yet, and only where it fits.

Request a song

What the screen shows

Cards run across the top, with a search box under them and four columns of songs below.

The Requests screen with three cards across the top, a search box and four columns of songs named Main requests, Main songs, Vocal requests and Vocals.

The Requests screen

  1. The cards across the top. They show the song, the vocals and the vocal line that are at the white line on Live Mix.
  2. The search box. Type part of an artist or a title to filter all four columns.
  3. Main requests. These are the songs that have been requested as whole songs. A note under a song, such as "Tempo differs", says how it fits.
  4. Main songs. These are the songs in the Main songs mix source. Tap one to request it. A group such as "A (4)" holds the songs that start with A.
  5. Vocal requests and Vocals. These work like the two Main columns, but a tap asks for the song's vocals.

The cards at the top

Each card shows what is at the white line on Live Mix, one card for each lane. The Live Mix guide explains the white line.

The Vocals and Vocal line cards appear only while their lane has a block at the white line. They show what is there, whether or not you are hearing that lane.

To hear that vocal, tap its lane. Hear a mashup has the steps.

Request a song

  1. Find the song under "Main songs" or "Vocals". Use the search box if the list is long.
  2. Tap it. It moves to "Main requests" or "Vocal requests", and the mix works it in.
  3. To take a request back, tap it in its requests column. It goes back to its song column.

Requests don't record who made them, so anyone can take back any request.

A song with "Played" under it has already played in this mix. You can request it again, and its note can say "Will replay".

Main or vocal request

The column you tap decides what the mix does with the song.

The mix plans a few parts ahead, and a request doesn't rebuild those. It works into the parts after them, so a request can leave the list a little before you hear the song.

With several requests, the mix takes them one at a time. It starts with the song that fits what is playing best, and a request that has waited a while gets its turn. The tempo moves toward that song a little at each song change.

Notes under a request

A note can appear under a requested song. A status and a tempo or key note can appear together, separated by a dot.

An amber note with a warning mark means the mix can't play the song for now.

The amber notes
NoteWhat it means
Playlist not in useA vocal request whose playlist is no longer in the mix source.
Doesn't fit the themeA main request that doesn't match the theme.
Hidden from mixesThe song is hidden in Library, so it won't play in mixes.
Can't playMix-a-Mash can't load the song.

A grey note doesn't stop the song from playing.

The grey notes
NoteWhat it means
Plays without mashupsA main request that is still preparing for mashups. It plays as a whole song.
Will replayA main request that already played in this mix. It can play again.
Might still playA main request whose playlist is no longer in the mix source. It can still play.
Playing (2 of 7 used)A vocal request the mix has started to use. The numbers count how many of the song's sections of vocals it has used.
Tempo differsThe song's tempo isn't the same as the song playing now.
Key differsThe song's key doesn't go with the song playing now.
Tempo and key differBoth of those apply.

Find a song

Type in "Search artist or title" to filter all four columns. A search with fewer than 100 results shows a plain list, without letter groups.

Songs are listed from A to Z by title.

Once a column has 100 songs or more, it groups its songs by the first letter of the title, such as "A (4)". Every group starts closed, so tap a letter to open it.

On a phone

A narrow screen, such as a phone held upright, shows the columns two by two. Requests are on the left and songs on the right, with the Main songs pair above the Vocals pair.

Requests on a phone, with the three cards and the search box across the top and the four columns in two rows of two.

Friends who join from their phones can request songs here. To set up a phone as a remote or let friends join, see Use your phone as a remote.
